Creating Opportunities for Independence

The Resource Center (TRC)

MHA helps individuals who are survivors of an acquired brain injury (ABI) or living with a disabling medical condition such as multiple sclerosis or severe diabetes to live their best life.

The Resource Center, a day program of MHA, helps members overcome barriers through natural, sustainable community supports and life-stage appropriate accommodations in relevant parts of their lives. By designing services and interventions individually, we seek to honor pre-injury lifestyles, cultures, family and environment. Every program and activity we offer creates opportunities for independence.

Through The Resource Center, our caring staff guides and supports our members to reclaim their abilities. Every program and activity we offer creates opportunities for independence.

Member-Driven

The Resource Center adapts programming to help members get what they need and want. Members drive the planning of each week’s calendar, down to the specific classes, support groups, guest speakers, special event nights, outings and volunteer work they are most passionate about. This degree of involvement gives members a feeling of ownership and belonging that enriches their engagement.

Goal-Oriented

With guidance from staff, The Resource Center members define their own personal goals and the approaches that support those goals:

  • Regain independence through improved memory and physical mobility
  • Enhance self-reliance through fine motor skills and hand control
  • Meet and engage with peers through The Resource Center activities
  • Express feelings and ideas through art, music, writing or crafts
  • Prepare for a return to employment by working on vocational and computer skills
  • Enjoy a better quality of life by engaging with friends, family and the community

Relevant

The Resource Center helps members overcome barriers through natural, sustainable community supports and life-stage appropriate accommodations in relevant parts of their lives. By designing services and interventions individually, we seek to honor pre-injury lifestyle, culture, family and environment.

Home Depot assisting TRC participant
By John Collins September 5, 2024
Our Resource Center (TRC) has been making great strides! Earlier this spring, members of the Home Depot Foundation generously donated their time and resources to build raised garden beds with our Resource Center program members. The group spent the day constructing beds for their garden to make gardening easily accessible for our members.

In celebration of Disability Pride Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight the new adaptive technology MHA’s The Resource Center (TRC) is utilizing in their day-to-day programming. Tools such as the assistive grips, kitchen tools, and the MusicGlove aid in the recovery process by making it easier and more accessible for our program members to accomplish daily tasks while having fun in their recovery. Working in tandem with our care team, TRC works with the members to foster greater independence for our members on their journey to recovery.

Luisa, 52, has been a member of our New Way Service’s Resource Center since 2018. In 2017, while working as a dispatcher, Luisa suddenly couldn’t remember how to do her job. Tasks that were once easy for her became difficult. She then noticed that she was having trouble speaking and moving. “I looked in the mirror, and I noticed my face was melting down from one side.” Luisa couldn’t understand what was happening to her. Soon after, she suffered a couple of seizures at work, eventually forcing her to retire. It wasn’t until later that she was told she had a stroke. “When they told me this, I was scared for my life.”

Small by Design

The Resource Center is designed to feel like a spacious, modern home. It has a warm, inviting environment that helps members feel safe and supported. Members can attend daily, on certain days, or more casually as interest and availability allow.

Referrals

All The Resource Center members are referred for services, typically by the Department of Developmental Services or the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. We primarily serve individuals with brain injury as a result of stroke or accident. We also serve those with a waiver who have significant medical needs but not necessarily a brain injury. This could include people with multiple sclerosis or diabetes.
